Show Info by Larry Gollner:
During our session at the Pavillon on the 29th we had a useful informal discussion on pricing paintings for sale in our coming show.  Pricing for any artist is a personal issue. An issue based on the artist’s experience and skill, rank in the art market place, and whether the individual artist is a working artist or an amateur that paints for the joy of painting and everywhere in between.  Plenty of guidelines and rules exist on pricing but for us in the VSC here is what you should understand because it will impact on what you receive for a painting you sell in our coming show.

If you believe that one of your painting deserves, assuming it sells, you receiving say $200 you must add the costs of putting it in the show when you price your painting.  The VSC charges a commission of 15%, we are required to pay 7% PST on all sales at our show, and the cost to the artist if the painting is sold by a credit charge transaction a 2.5 +/- % .  So to get the $200 you want in hand after a sale for your painting you need to add $30 for VSC commission, plus $16.10 for PST, plus $6.15 for a credit card charge for a total of $252.25 which I suggest that you round off at $260.

Some other interesting points that came up yesterday follow.

1.  Whatever method you use to establish the price of your paintings once done you cannot lower the price later for the same size work;

2.  The price that you list a painting for sale is not based on its quality because every  painting you put up for sale is of the same quality regardless of the media you use;

3.  Most artists determine  a value for their work based on the price per square inch they believe it is worth for an established  size of work that they commonly use.  Then as  the size of the painting goes up or down the price per square inch rises or declines in a rational manner.

4.  Individual painting prices can be adjusted, to a certain extent, based on it framing or mounting;

5.  Artists that are showing in a gallery are required by contract to be consistent with their pricing regardless of where they sell the work;

6.  It is better to keep you prices stable over time and to start at a reasonable price when listing your paintings for sale.
