Following his retirement, John began to revive a latent talent in sketching, encouraged by the excellent teaching skills of his artist wife and with the benefit of of some experience in engineering draftsmanship. He particularly enjoys en plein air painting and is fond of drawing and painting old buildings.
Born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, John is a graduate of Liverpool and a postgraduate of Manchester University. After graduation he began working as a project manager in the engineering industry. Following a subsequent career in management consultancy, human resource management, labour arbitration and higher education in his native Britain, John came to Victoria in 1987 and became immersed in a variety of volunteer activities.
John became a supporter of the Victoria Sketch Club after his wife Barbara became a member in 1991. He was honoured in 2003 with Honourary Membership in recognition for his exception work for the Club.
John served on the Committee established to organize the celebration of the Club's centennial in 2009, writing a comprehensive history of the Club to mark the event entitled, The Victoria Sketch Club, a Centennial Celebration.
