Scenes from June's plein air sessions
Kinsman Gorge Park, June 4th
June's first plein air was held at the Kinsman Gorge Park. This 11.6 hectare recreation area has been frequented by locals as far back as the 1860s. Originally opened in 1907, the Japanese Tea Gardens were demolished in 1941, then happily reinstated and re-opened with the support and generosity of the Kinsman Club.
Fisherman's Wharf, June 11th
Fisherman's Wharf remains a popular spot for the sketch club's summer plein air. The original 390 foot wharf was built after the Second World War, and could accommodate up to sixty fish-packing ships along its six floating piers.
Watch this charming interaction with Jack Greenwell and a visitor to Fisherman's Wharf. Luckily for us, Joan Head was there to capture the moment. "I couldn’t help but turn around as the singing voice was so sweet. After taking this video, I turned to the lady and told her it was beautiful. She replied, he gave to me, so I gave to him..."
Thank you, Jack, sweet lady and Joan for a beautiful moment.
Banfield Jetty, June 18th
For June's third plein air, VSC members met at the Banfield Jetty to sketch to'ings and fro'ings on the Gorge waterway. The jetty is also the jumping off point for the Gorge Swim Fest Society, and is fondly referred to by its membership as the "cleanest swimming hole in the Victoria area."
This is the first time our club has held a plein air in this location.
Mary Lake, June 25th
The month's final plein air was held at the serenely beautiful Mary Lake, a nature preserve managed by the Greater Victoria Greenbelt Society (GVGS). The area encompasses 73 acres of coastal Douglas Fir forest and the 13,000 year-old Millstream watershed. GVGS Chair Bob McMinn greeted VSC members upon their arrival, then paddled around the lake inspecting foliage in a picturesque red canoe, much to the delight of the sketching artists.
HISTORY CORNER
It’s very appropriate that we have Mary Lake Nature Sanctuary on our summer painting schedule given some interesting links with former members. The land was owned from 1946 to 1963 by Gertrude Snider (pictured above), a keen conservationist who ensured that the property remained ecologically sound during her tenure. A talented artist, Snider joined the Island Arts and Crafts Society in 1932, serving on its executive, and, subsequently, as Secretary of the newly-formed Victoria Sketch Club until the 1960s.
We were first informed of this connection two years ago by the Greater Victoria Greenbelt Society, which had purchased the 30-hectare property to create this nature park, and realized its debt to the philanthropy of Snider and subsequent owners.
There is also a fascinating story from a previous Mary Lake property owner's relative regarding the remains of a cabin close to the lake, which were sometimes used by a woman with animals in cages. There has been speculation (unverified so far) that this lady was none other than Emily Carr, who was known to travel with her caged monkey, Woo, in the area.
