Welcome to 2023!
President Gillian Rhodes opened our VSC 114th year of artistic activity by reminding us how successful our last show was! We are now a mere 10 weeks out from this year's 2023 show, and all hands are needed to make things go smoothly. If you have not yet volunteered, please contact our Show Director and/or Team leader (see below).

Key points / Critical Dates raised about the 2023 show:
Larry reminded all to follow closely the VSC Show Information Package #4.

February 14 is when everyone’s list of paintings is required. We expect to have between 120-160 paintings, so no exception will be made. Our paintings need labels, and the Design and Hanging Teams need to know how many of our large, medium, and small paintings taken from our lists.

February 14 Rand Harrison, at the WPP, will brief us on the presentation and framing of our paintings for our show. See Information Package #4 .

February 28, Mary Brackenbury, will collect bios (81/2" x 11") with current pictures of your paintings for the Show Book. Review your current bio page and update as needed.

February 28, if you want to include a sketch in our Sketch Book (11" X 14") ensure Mary has it.

Treasurer Mike Pipes outlined our financial position and explained that the VSC takes 25% commission on show sales. The VSC requires 15% to cover show costs, 7% PST is taken on all sales and forwarded to the Finance Ministry, and 3% is for the charge for our Square online credit card processing system. Build the 25% into your pricing.

Cheers,

Larry

Club News
VSC Members were saddened to learn of the passing of Rory Kirby (Feb 15, 1928 - Dec 23, 2022). Originally from Kent, England, Rory studied Physics at Exeter University and moved to Canada with Nortel in 1957. On retirement in 1987 the Kirbys moved to Victoria, and sadly in 2005 Rory’s wife Isobel passed away. In 2013, Rory married Caroline Hunter, a well-loved member of the Sketch Club. Rory was creating quilts and fabric arts and without any difficulty joined the Sketch Club. Rory was an enthusiastic and very helpful member of the Club. His expertise in technology and organizational skills led him to be our treasurer and webmaster, and he also created the VSC Logo. Rory certainly earned the status of an Honorary Member of the Victoria Sketch Club, and his friendship and beautiful paintings and tapestries will be remembered.
2023 Sessions
Windsor Park Pavilion

January 10

There was a sizeable and eager turnout for our first gathering of 2023, and today's sketching challenge, organized by Pat Hindmarch-Watson, was inspired by the New Yorker's Christmas cover! A stack of unpacked boxes made for a challenging study in perspective.

January 17

Another good turnout for today's session presented by club historian John Lover (pictured), on the topic of UK artist L.S. Lowry. Famous for his distinctive 'matchstick' style people, Lowry painted urban scenes in industrial areas of northern England. Happily, there was a wonderful on-topic scene just outside WPP for members to sketch!

January 24

Today's theme was managed by member Mary Brackenbury, and the topic was "travel souvenirs"! Members were invited to bring in small mementoes of much-loved trips!

January 31

More than twenty-five VSC members turned out today to participate in Virginia Hutzuliak's 'Mind Mapping' session! Mind Mapping (or webbing) is a visual idea-generating technique that helps artists of all stripes brainstorm ideas. She also shared some book titles with us (pictured below) that have been tremendously valuable to her. Thank you, Virginia, for sharing with us today!
History Corner
by John Lover

This month’s subject brings us up to relatively recent times, although our Club’s longest serving active member, Christine Gollner, is the only one of our present number to remember him personally. Certainly, as an established administrator and educator in the world of art, and a reputable practising artist, John Climer seems to have been well respected for his stature in our Club.

John Eldon Climer was born in 1924 in Syracuse, New York. After serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force (1943-1946), he studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto, receiving his Associate Diploma in 1950.

From 1951 to 1957, he worked in several communities in Ontario as an advisor for community art recreation programs, and later, based in Ottawa from 1958 to 1963, as an organizer and producer of the Lakeside Festival of the Arts in that city.

Climer’s next move was to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where he served as curator and director of the distinguished Mendel Art Gallery from 1963 to 1979. During this time, he also spent a year teaching art at the University of Saskatchewan and curating the Canadian Government Pavilion in Montreal for Expo 67. In his role as curator at the Mendel Art Gallery, Climer became well acquainted with the Saskatchewan arts community, working with, and mentoring, local artists.

A gifted artist in his own right, he exhibited his work across Canada in both group and solo shows, and he is represented in the collections of the Government of Saskatchewan and the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon. He worked in a variety of media, including oil, watercolour, and etching, and with a variety of subjects including landscapes and still life.

As Climer expressed his philosophy: “My subject, I would like to think, is the medium, and how it may be exploited with reference to what my statement might be.”

Moving on again, this time to British Columbia, he became well-known for his art instruction courses during the 1980s. In the winter months his routine was to encourage his students to continue with their painting here while he enjoyed the warmer climes down south. Students’ work would be critiqued on his return. As Delphine Large, one of his many successful proteges later recalled, “He had remarkable perception in noting the art student’s direction.”

During his association with our Club in these years, members were clearly able to benefit from his influence and his presence as an advisor and exemplar of the practice and theory of art. Christine remembers that he attended many of the summer outings and contributed to annual shows with many of his small paintings.

Sadly, this period proved to be relatively short-lived, as John Climer died in 1994 while wintering in Yuma, Arizona.
