Club News
Hello VSC members,

Here we are, finally reunited at Windsor Park Pavilion! The timing is great, as we have lots to do to focus on the upcoming show, with paintings to finish and new ones to start.

We have nine sessions at the pavilion before we start our spring / summer plein air painting sessions.

The plan is to continue on a week-to-week basis, bringing what you love to paint. Getting quick feedback from others at the beginning if needed on a continuing work and at the end on finished paintings also. Along with our week-to-week painting, there will be some short demos by members, a Canadian Art History presentation by Mary, and, we hope, a formal critique.

We're still required to follow Covid protocols so please bring vaccine passports and check-in when you arrive. Masks and distancing are mandatory. Bring your own refreshments and remember to dress warmly as we will have fresh air from open windows.

Sessions run from 12:30 to 4:30.

March & April sessions at Windsor Park Pavilion are as follows:
March 1 - Framing requirements demo for show -Rand
March 8,15
March 21-27 Show  - Opening March 22
No Session March 29 (Spring Break Camps at WPP)
April 5
April 12
April 19
April 26 - AGM

Demos by members TBA

Be inspired, come and life draw members as they stay in one place working, bring items for your own still life, check the trees out though the windows, bring a work in progress, bring those materials bought long ago that have been sitting on a shelf... play... practice... explore... perfect... have FUN! And bring a painting for feedback.

First day back at WPP after a long pandemic haul, and the turnout was good. Below is Terry McBride collecting members' submission documents in preparation for the March show, our first in two years.

February 22

Cool weather kept numbers down to about 20 today, but being back at Windsor Park is a wonderful chance to reconnect with colleagues and with art.

Call for Tulip art ðŸŒ·ðŸŒ·ðŸŒ·

Have you painted a tulip? If not, there's still time to create one for April!

April is Parkinsons Awareness Month.
The goal and vision is to have a wall filled with tulips in the Fine Arts Gallery in the Parkinson Wellness Project Building at 202- 2680 Blanshard Street (near Douglas and Hillside).

Tulip pieces will be exhibited from April 1st - June 30th, 2022. Fifty percent of sales are happily donated to Parkinson Wellness Project.

PWP is a non-profit organization where people like myself join others with Parkinsons in an effort to slow its progress through a variety of exercise classes and informative lectures led by amazing coaches, neurologists and staff… to mention just a few.

The Tulip Exhibition is open to all PWP members, friends and family as well as local artists. Please contact me before March 7th if you would like to participate.

Or are you interested in exhibiting your regular artwork on a 3-month rotation in PWP art gallery?

Please contact me for further information at:

Thank you!

History Corner
by John Lover
From its outset in 1909, the Island Art Club was to include in its membership representatives of the most distinguished families in the province. One of these was Rose Bullen, a granddaughter of Sir James Douglas, the first Governor of British Columbia.

Born in New Westminster in 1863, as Annie, Amelia (Rose) Bushby, she followed in the footsteps of her aunt, Martha Douglas Harris, youngest daughter of Sir James, and one of the Club’s Charter Members. The multi-talented Martha specialized in still life and portraits and was also a writer and proficient in weaving and lacemaking.

Like Martha, Rose was sent to England for schooling, where she studied drawing and music, receiving further art instruction in Germany.

In 1884, after her return to Victoria, Rose married Arthur Fitzherbert Bullen founder of the BC Marine Ways shipbuilding firm, which ultimately became Yarrows. The family home was “Oakdene” in Esquimalt, and the local Bullen Park was named for the family.

As an artist, Rose was noted for her oils and watercolours, taking inspiration from the BC landscape during her frequent travels. The watercolour shown here, entitled “Arbutus Trees,” painted in the Goldstream region, is one of the three of her works owned by the Union Club of Victoria.

Her work appeared at the Island Arts and Crafts Society’s annual exhibitions from 1917 to 1936.

She died in Victoria in 1936.
