Victoria Sketch Club News
On March 10, the Victoria Sketch Club Executive Committee had to make the necessary decision to cancel the club's 2020 art show at Glenlyon Norfolk School due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.

The Executive Committee cancellation process continued as the pandemic became increasing active locally. On March 13th, the remainder of our Winter programme was cancelled, and the next morning all Oak Bay Parks and Recreation facilities were closed.

The AGM is currently planned April 21st, and will be conducted online. More information and instructions will be forthcoming. Depending on the public health situation and weather conditions, we sincerely hope to start our Spring & Summer Programme in early May, but of course, have no control or influence over either.

'Til then, stay healthy, everyone!

Archives Team Update
The VSC Archive Team, (John Lover, Myra Baynton and Val Lawton) has been working to cull, organize existing material, and collect new documents and photographs that tell the story of the VSC over the years. We recently met with a representative of the Provincial Archives to determine how to prepare materials for storage, now and in the future. These materials will be used for internal and external research purposes.

Here is a brief outcome of our meeting:
  1. The files will be stored in a box(es) in the locker at WPP
  2. The Provincial Archives will take the materials every 5 years.  They are interested only in original documents containing information that is not available elsewhere. (eg. not newspaper clippings, online biographies or other information that can be accessed through research of other venues/sources).
  3. The documents are to be organized in chronological order and cover the following Club functions:
  • VSC MEMBERSHIP
Biographies of current and past artist members.  Includes ‘Notables’ such as Carr, Harrison, Shadbolt etc. Privacy issues will be addressed.
  • ADMINISTRATION
Constitution; grants received; minutes; meetings (Annual, Extraordinary); Presidents’ reports; Executive Committee Annual Reports; Annual Financial statements.
  • COMMUNICATION
Communication about the activities of the Club.  For example: The Newsletters typically contain information about the weekly program, the venue for the Paint-Out and individual members’ shows; the History Book is also a valuable source.
  • EXHIBITIONS
Records of the Annual Show (or other Club exhibitions).  This should include participating members, examples of posters, invitations and other relevant information.
  • MISCELLANEOUS
A catch-all file that contains relevant, interesting artifacts that don’t fit in the above categories.  This should be kept relatively small.

REQUEST TO VSC MEMBERSHIP:
  1. We are interested in acquiring any materials that fit the above categories, particularly from the years 2002 – 2008 and 2010 – 2019. Hard copies or electronic materials are appropriate. Please bring the documents (or data sticks) to VSC (or email them) and give them to Myra, John or Val.
Thank you from the Archives team!
Summer 2020 en plein air Program
As we begin planning for the VSC outdoor summer program, it's of paramount importance to take into consideration the concerns and precautions regarding the spread of the COVID-19 virus. At the time of publishing, the COVID-19 situation is still evolving and undergoing constant reassessment throughout both the public and private sectors.

Consequently, a 2020 VSC summer program will be proposed on a month-to-month basis, but with the optimistic view that many club members may still have a desire to spend more time outdoors, find a spot, with an appropriate degree of separation from others, to paint or sketch  for an hour or two, and see and chat with one’s painting friends (albeit with a bit more social distance!).

To that end, we'll start with a few familiar and relatively ‘wide open’ public venues.

May 5 Playfair Park
May 12 Cattle Point
May19 Finnerty Gardens
May 26 Island View Beach/Mitchell’s Farm

Assuming the need does not arise over the next few weeks to cancel any of the above venues, more specific details regarding each location will be sent to all members around April 24.

Afterwards, continuing with the month-to-month approach, we will continue to assess the suitability/availability of other sites, both old favourites and new possibilities.

In the meantime, should you have comments or questions please feel free to contact us:

It was regrettable that our 2020 Annual Show at the Beach Drive campus of Glenyon-Norfolk School had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. However, we can be sure that the tradition of a long-standing relationship between the VSC and GLN will endure-- even though the life of our time-honoured gymnasium has come to its end!

During the life of the Island Arts and Crafts Society, there was no regular venue for the annual exhibitions which began in 1910. The Society was obliged to search for a suitable location annually and settle for the likes of the Alexandra Club, Union Bank Building, Pemberton Building, Belmont Building, Hudson’s Bay Company, Crystal Gardens, Board of Trade Building and Coast Hall.

Similarily after 1954, under the banner of the Victoria Sketch Club, scattered venues included the Dominion Bank, the Hudson's Bay Company, Eaton's, the Hudson’s Bay Company, Eaton’s, the Dominion Hotel, the Provincial Museum and Hillside Mall. But in 1984, Victoria Sketch Club President, Liza Chesshire, a former Matron at Glenlyon Norfolk School, made an arrangement with an old colleague, school’s Headmaster Keith Walker, to hold our annual show in the school gymnasium. This reflected an earlier tie as IACS members Ina Uhthoff and Will Menelaws who, between them, had taught at the school for 21 years.

We still enjoy this close relationship between school and club, and have always been appreciative of the school’s co-operation and support.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of their deal in 2009, Keith and Liza were re-united in a cake-cutting ceremony as part of our landmark Centennial event.  Sadly, both passed away in 2017.

The significance of this relationship is that in 1984, the Club, for the first time, was given a permanent annual fixture at a place we have come to regard as “home,” and in recent years we have been happy to include the artwork of GLN pupils in our shows.
Members News
VSC member Sharon Stone is thrilled to share the news that The Inn at Laurel Point has named a conference room in her honour, which will be known as the Stone Room. This is the fourth such designation given by The Inn, two of whom are the late Tony Hunt and the late Mungo Martin, well-loved and respected First Nations artists. Sharon has been artist-in-residence at the Inn for 6+ years, and is the first non-Indigenous artist to receive this honour.

“Mungo Martin was an excellent carver who originally started the totems in Thunderbird Park in Victoria. Mungo was father to Henry Hunt, grandfather to Chief Tony Hunt, and great grandfather to Tony Hunt Jr. All of these men were wonderful artists."

"I feel both honoured and humbled by this act, as I am that I have been included with such well known and excellent artists."

Congratulations, Sharon!
