Sketching a live model(s!)
Today was supposed to have been sketching from a live model, but unfortunately our model fell ill. SO... Terry and Bonny spun on a dime, and we pivoted to the classic 'bus stop' scenario, where we all took turns modelling. It was great fun!
February 13
BYOP (Bring your own Painting)
The day started off with a Show 'n' Share, so many members brought in pieces potentially destined for sale at our upcoming show in a few weeks. Afterwards, we quietly settled into working on our own canvasses.
February 20
Critique with Claire Christenel
Many club members brought work in today for Claire to critique, who provided wonderfully helpful feedback. Claire will be running a free workshop on Sunday Nov. 30th from 2 pm - 4 pm, and will demonstrate how to break down a landscape down into its large value masses, then doing small value studies to find the best format for the scene.

Framing Demo with Rand!
Member Rand Harrison was in good form today on two topics -- the first being tips re: framing your artwork as professionally as possible. Take note-- next month (March 12), Rand and Peter Marcetta will be on hand with their handy-dandy framing tools to help members out with any last-minute framing needs / questions. (Also note: framing details were emailed to club members on both Jan 10 and Jan 25.)

Rand's second wonderful topic was a slide show entitled "Pushing the Beach" of his most recent journey on a working ship up and into the Broughton Archipelago aboard the MV Aurora Explorer. This voyage was the bookend to a previous trip some 20 years earlier aboard the same vessel, which explored (while working) the more southern route, in and around the Discovery Islands.

Thank you, Rand!
Member Profile
with Ken McKenzie
Some of my earliest recollections are sitting beside my father and watching him paint in pastels. This was my first exposure to art. It would be many years before I would return to further explore this interest.

After art school my creative interests led me into a variety of creative positions.  For 13 years I was with the Hudsons Bay Company (HBC) and eventually worked out of the head office in Winnipeg as the national director overseeing the implementation of the merchandising and visual presentation priorities in the 250 HBC stores across Canada. I eventually left the Bay and started my own design business as a retail sales consultant. At this time I also marketed, conceptualized, designed and installed seasonal decor packages for shopping centres primarily in Manitoba.

I have also had a keen interest in travelling and have visited 35 countries and travelled by motorcycle in 23 of those countries. Some motorcycling trips have included riding from Germany to Corsica; the UK; Spain to Morocco; Winnipeg to the Copper Canyon in Mexico en route to riding the four deserts of North America; Victoria to Panama City, Panama; and Victoria to Cabo San Lucas.

These trips included many highlights including canyoneering in Utah and trekking to 100’ above Mt. Everest Base Camp in Nepal to name a few.

Having finally retired, I am now able to devote much more time to my passion for painting. After painting part-time in pastels for 20 years, I am now able to work full time on my art work. My subject matter has included the places that I have visited, however more recently I have focused on capturing the iconic locations from our VSC plein air outings and from other unique locations closer to home.

NOTE: Ken McKenzie is the Artist in Residence at the Empress Hotel for the month of February.

 Interesting Arts Reads
A couple of VSC members read the following story, and felt it was worth sharing with the club! Entitled The Women with Superhuman Vision, it is the story of atiny group of people can see 'invisible' colours -- an ability known as 'tetrochromacy' -- that no-one else can perceive. How do they do it?
