VSC 2024 Show Update #2
Preparations for the 2024 VSC Art Show are underway! Here's an update and some (more!) important information for you

This is the second of several updates (see VSC's October newsletter for the first update).

POSTER / INVITATION SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
Winners will be announced at the Christmas Lunch, December 12.

ONE PAINTING PER MEMBER!
It’s important to think of this show as a club show, where together we all contribute, participate and host the show.

POINTS TO PONDER:
Based on input from last year's show committee, here're some thoughts on preparing for this year's show...
  • Paint what inspires you, what you want and what you love, rather than what you think will sell.
  • Give yourself time to work on your painting so it's the best representation of your work, and not rushed.
  • Consider the size of your paintings to allow for easy framing. Custom framing can be expensive.
  • Buy your frames in advance once you know which paintings you’ll submit.
  • Consider your framing… it can add value and be more attractive to a buyer.
  • If you're not using a frame but a deep canvas, be sure to finish the sides.
  • Think about pricing-- consider your costs. Talk to others.
  • Our show is about exhibiting/celebrating the talent in our club. Sales are a side benefit and help to support the club but it is the quality and variety of our collected works that’s most important.
Avoid the Following:
  • finding a frame at the last minute.
  • Using inappropriate frames or poor hardware (note: there are members who can help with framing).
  • Long titles-- short titles are better, catchier
  • Getting 'hung-up' on where and how your paintings are hung. It is the club’s focus to showcase everyone’s work and hangers will be mixing paintings up to be fair to all participants.
  • Don’t feel badly if you don’t sell a painting. It’s not a reflection on you…. like real estate, you just need the right person to walk in and see your work.

Life drawing
Following up with Noah Layne's human-form session of a few weeks ago, today's session was life drawing with an excellent life model so we could practice again. Thank you, Celeste!
Member Profile
with John Lover
Following his retirement, John revived a latent talent in sketching, encouraged by the excellent teaching skills of Barbara, his late artist wife, and with the benefit of excessive doodling during school-day lessons and some experience in engineering draftsmanship. He work mainly in watercolour, particularly enjoying plein air painting, and has fun in drawing and painting old buildings and gardens.
Born in Birkenhead, England, he is a graduate of Liverpool and a postgraduate of Manchester University. John began working life as a graduate trainee in the engineering industry, becoming a project manager. There followed a career in management consultancy, human resource management, and teaching in his native Britain, where he served for eleven years as a part-time panel member of ACAS, the national arbitration service.

After arriving in Victoria in 1987, he immersed himself in a variety of volunteer activities with the Royal Museum, Dispute Resolution Centre, and Broadmead Lodge. Otherwise, he has always been an avid sportsman (though now mainly a TV sports fan) and have always enjoyed spending time with family.

John became a supporter of the Victoria Sketch Club after Barbara became a member in 1991, and was awarded Honorary Membership in recognition of his work for the organization (lots of lifting and carrying!).

John served on the Committee established to organize the celebration of the Club's centennial in 2009, writing a comprehensive history of the Club to mark the event entitled The Victoria Sketch Club, a Centennial Celebration, and later contributed biographies of former members to the VSC's monthly newsletter section known as History Corner.
Editor's Note:  This month's Member's Profile is the first of, I hope, many, and our resident historian John graciously allowed me to use his profile to kick off the series. After all John's hard work for the club, I think it it's a perfect choice!

Thank you for everything, John!
