VSC's Upcoming Schedule
November and December
We have made some changes to the remainder of the fall program, so please note the NEW SCHEDULE below.

All sessions will include Show and Share, with the exception of the November 21st critique. As usual, you're welcome to work on your own paintings during the sessions, except for Nov. 14 and 21.

Nov 7 Bring Your Own Work (BYOW) -- with the critique coming soon and requests for the show poster, we thought it might be good to have a week where you can bring in something you are working on.
Nov 14 Noah Layne  (*Noah has requested a date-change) Noah will be doing a demonstration on drawing skills with a life model.
Nov  21 Critique with guest artist Steve Dickerson -- Steve will give constructive professional feedback on one painting per member.
Nov 28  Life drawing with a life model - female nude
Dec 5  Still life - winter theme
Dec 12  Christmas Luncheon

Greater detail will be sent out a few days prior to each session.

Many thanks!

Note from VSC President
As the season shifts into autumn, we are now fully engaged in our indoor program. A lot of effort and time has gone into making this an interesting and valuable opportunity for our members, so please thank Bonnie and Terri often as they work hard to develop this program for us!

The Show Committee is now very active with planning for next year’s VSC Art Show to be held at Glenlyon Norfolk School. Please consider what role you can play in making this the best show ever.

It never ceases to amaze me as I look around on a Tuesday and see members engaging with one another - giving suggestions, encouraging one another and generally supporting your fellow artist. This is what our community of VSC is all about -- the people -- and the richness of experience, talents and ability, bringing out the best in each other. Carry on!

VSC President
Note from VSC Executive
As the Sketch Club uses three media streams including Newsletter, Facebook and Instagram please get in touch with Vicky if you do not want your work/face picture used on these sites.

Many thanks!

Painting Sizes and Options:
Unfortunately, the wooden strip around the gym is not appropriate for hanging paintings. Because it sits away from the wall, the paintings bend forward. This means that, in addition to the 14 wooden screens, we will be using other methods to display the paintings.

SHOW OPTIONS
*Please see email of October 27th, sent to all VSC members re: show options *

Each member chooses one option, indicating the number and size of their paintings. Your paintings may be smaller, but must not be larger than the size in your option.

Note:  For one year, we will test the use of total square inches as a way to provide some more flexibility in measuring the paintings. If you choose the fourth option, then you are responsible for calculating the total number of square inches used (including the frame), to a maximum of 3100 sq. inches, and submitting this information on the form. The maximum size of the painting remains 32” x 42”.

This is the first of several updates to come as the planning develops.

Let’s make this another great show!

Member Profiles
As discussed in our October 24 session, our stalwart club historian, John Lover, has decided to step back after a tremendous contribution to the club newsletter. After 52 History Corners (yes, you read right-- that's fifty-two!), John has covered a considerable amount of club history. And as he says, he's running out of subject matter!

We would like to continue with a regular column, and the idea of a monthly Member Profile section bubbled to the surface. As this October issue is larger than usual, our first Member Profile will appear in next month's newsletter.

I would ask you to start thinking about your profiles which, as Nirmala pointed out, can be very similar to your show bio. Tell us a little about yourself, including what attracted you to our sketch club. Also please included a bio picture, as well as a sample of your art.

Submissions and / or queries can be sent to me, the Editor

Subtle Subversion in Soviet-Era Poland

In 1960s communist Poland, artists followed the dictates of Soviet Realism or were virtually silenced. Some circumvented this grip on their art by creating movie posters whose silence was eloquent. The posters became an artform through which to express a full range of aesthetic release, from rage to satire. The constraints of the state fell away. The images rendered are shockingly bold and inventive.

Ironically, a totalitarian regime engenders either sheepish compliance or an underground of subversion. Art is necessarily oppositional. It challenges the margins set down by a society that has settled for a conforming order. These posters seem to have been the creative burst into a sort of chaos which establishes a reordering of possibilities.

When the grip of the state was loosened, the arresting images vanished in favor of conventional commodified posters indistinguishable from American advertisements.

After Poland regained its independence, these posters became collectible. This exhibition is from Norm and Peggy Aylsworth Levine’s collection.

This exhibition will be held at the Cowichan Public Art Gallery, 126 Ingram Street, Duncan, BC from November 9, 2023 to January 20, 2024. Opening hours and days may vary during the Christmas Period. Please call 250-737-5229 to confirm.

For more information on the exhibition, please contact Rebecca Hazell at becky.hazell108@gmail.com or Jock Hildebrand at president@cowichangallery.ca
