Venue: Windsor Park Pavilion Time: Start time 11 am ; lunch break 12:30 ; sharing / critiquing runs from 2:30
The indoor season at Windsor Park Pavilion has started and we look forward to interesting sessions (we have five this month!) in the upcoming weeks. Sessions are Tuesdays, 11 am to 3 pm every Tuesday, with a lunch break around 12:30. At 2:30, we'll start our Show and Share, where members are welcome to bring any artwork for comment and feedback from other members. Members are also welcome to work on something of their own if they wish. More details about our October sessions will be sent out prior to each session.
Oct 3 Still life – Fall Foliage theme Oct 10 Character model – Larry Gollner in full dress uniform (including kilt!) Oct 17 Black and White creative challenge – put away your colour for the afternoon, and draw, sketch, or paint in black, white or greys. It’s a great opportunity to focus on drawing with pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, or do value studies in paint or other mediums. Oct 24 Creative Challenge – Paint like your favourite artist! Bring in an image of a painting done by your favourite artist, or some artist you don’t paint like, and copy it. It’s amazing what you can learn. You can also paint something in the style of another artist. Oct 31 Still life – Halloween theme
Many thanks!

Almost twenty VSC members and some half-dozen spouses / partners attended part or all of the week at this year's Paint-Out. Club members were lucky to have exceptionally warm weather, and had the opportunity to visit numerous venues up and down the coast beyond the Beach Acres area. The 5pm Show & Share outside of Agnes’ cabin provided stimulating discussion and lots of “oohs and aahs” at the end of each day! |

After a beautiful summer of plein airs, members were no doubt happy to return to the Windsor Park Pavilion, especially now that the weather's becoming less predictable.
The pavilion is a legacy from Oak Bay’s Centennial, and the building we currently occupy was rebuilt in 2006 on the site of the original pavilion. For an interesting look at Windsor Park in its early days, check out Don Descoteau's story in the Oak Bay News, published in 2011. |

Louise Loveland was typical of the many art-trained ladies who immigrated here from Britain in their middle years, early in the twentieth century, and who were soon attracted to our Club to practice their talents.
She was born in 1869 in Sudbury, England, a picturesque town with artistic connections, being the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough and in a region which was a favourite painting venue of John Constable. We know little about Louise’s earlier life in England, but shortly after her arrival in Victoria, she joined the newly formed Island Arts Club in 1911, and was a regular contributor to its annual exhibitions until 1941, the year of her passing.
Louise was competent in the media of oils, watercolour, pastels, and black and white sketching. As our illustrations suggest, her focus was on depictions of Victoria’s landmarks, such as the Legislature buildings, and portraits of fellow Club members, such as Maude Lettice (pictured here).
She showed her work at the Art Association of Montreal Spring Exhibition in 1921 and at the BC Artists Annual Exhibition at Vancouver Art Gallery from 1933 to 1940.
Louise died in Victoria in 1941. |
